Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles

Big Brothers Big Sisters works to help children to reach their potential by offering them professional support and a one-to-one mentoring relationship.  They work to strengthen children’s commitment to school and to academic achievement and to strengthen the social, emotional, cognitive and behavioral competencies of those children who live in poverty.  In addition, with their one-to-one mentoring, they work to strengthen each child’s sense of self and to enhance their self worth.

They have both Community Based Mentoring Programs and School Based Programs.  The Community Based Programs match one child with a carefully screened, caring mentor who supports and assists the child.  They have a trained manager called a Match Support Specialist and together the mentor and the mentee make a one year commitment to the relationship.

With the School Based Program, volunteers offer individualized time and attention to children in elementary and middle school.  Teachers identify those who are most in need and volunteers then make a one year commitment to meet the child for one hour a week.
