Little Hands Virginia Expands Diaper Bank

Little Hands Virginia, a Richmond nonprofit that supplies diapers and other baby essentials to families in need, is leasing new warehouse space to keep up with demand. The organization now moves 100,000 diapers a month to families across Central Virginia, and it needed room to store more.

Little Hands Virginia is a nonprofit founded by Taylor Keeney in 2019 that collects and distributes diapers, formula, clothing and other essentials to families raising children under three years old. Keeney started the group from her garage, and six years later it runs a diaper bank that reaches families through a network of over 60 partner organizations, including schools, hospitals and food pantries across the region.

The need exists because federal and state assistance programs do not cover the cost. WIC, SNAP and TANF pay for food and some household expenses, but none of them pay for diapers, and a single child can go through thousands before turning three. Families who qualify for food assistance often still pay full price for diapers, a cost that adds up fast on a tight budget.

To meet growing demand, Little Hands Virginia leased the unit next to its Saunders Avenue headquarters in Richmond, expanding its space from 6,500 to over 11,600 square feet, with an anonymous donor covering the cost of the new lease. The added room lets the organization store more inventory as it extends its distribution outside Greater Richmond into all seven regions of Virginia’s food bank network, including Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia.

Organizers say the math behind the mission works out to roughly five and a half diapers for every dollar donated. With five full-time employees and hundreds of volunteers now covering a statewide footprint, Little Hands Virginia has grown from a one-woman effort in a garage into a diaper bank serving families in every region of Virginia.
